(translated from Spanish as best as I could): “I’m from Columbia and my husband and I met on the Internet. I’ve been here since December and we got married right over there in the little church across the street. The people here are some of the nicest I’ve ever known- the nicest and the kindest. But I do miss my family. Most of my family is still in Columbia, but one of my sisters met someone on the Internet, too, and she lives in Minnesota. And I have another sister who lives in Miami.” …. I was on night shift at the wood mill, so I’ve probably got big ol’ moons under my eyes right now.

(translated from Spanish by someone who has not spoken Spanish for a little while): “I’m from Columbia and my husband and I met on the Internet. But I’m here!”

“Before the restructuring we only had four volunteer firefighters. We receive federal tax dollars, and I’ll tell you-we weren’t putting out many fires. As of today, we’ve got about 25. The fire department’s restructuring was the first time we’ve had black folks and white folks trained as firefighters. Last week the church had its annual potluck, and we decided to invite the fire department. It was a big deal because it was one of the first times we had a potluck where we’d have black folks and white folks all together. We’re buying food all together here in the store, so we didn’t know why we couldn’t sit and eat all together. Even though it is 2014, things still take a really long time.”

: “Just in the last year, there’s been all sorts of changes in our community. There was that big restructuring of the fire department and this here little store reopened. I’ll tell you, it has just breathed life back into our little town. Anyways, we had it and it was a real big success. We had over 350 people there from around the county, 2240 pounds of pork and 550 patties. There wasn’t any time for games cause people were talking so much. We started cutting up meat by seven that morning and were cooking for the whole day. Someone said, ‘Well geez. We should have one of these every month. This is great.’ Things are changing around here.”

“It is really nice here cause it is so small and we are so close to each other. I just wish there were more kids around here. But I’m on my way to a final on Medical Terminology at the University (of West Alabama). And I think I am going to be late, so we’ve got to get going!”

It is an hour and a half away from here if I drive pretty fast…”
